What We Believe
Beliefs
As members of the body of Christ we realize that our doctrine is foundational to our beliefs and
establish who we are in Christ. (1 Timothy 4:16, Titus 1:9, 2 John 1:10)
Here are some of the key convictions that define Whitemarsh Island Baptist Church.
Scripture
Scripture alone is the sole infallible source of authority for our faith and practice. All truth necessary for our salvation and sanctification is taught in Scripture. The Bible is the highest and supreme authority on any matter on which it speaks. The preaching and teaching of God’s Word is the very heartbeat of our Church.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:19)
Salvation
Salvation is a gracious gift from God’s and found only in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit effectually work through the preached Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to call a people unto Himself. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone to the glory of God alone.
(Ephesians 2:1-11)
Baptism
Baptism is a means of grace given to the body of Christ. It is a holy ordinance by which the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit signifies our being united to Christ and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace and our commitment to follow the Lord.
(Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:12)
The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is a means of grace. It is a holy ordinance that represents and proclaims the death of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by giving and receiving bread and wine, according to Christ’s appointment. Those who receive the elements in a worthy manner do so not in a physical or carnal sense but, through faith, become participants in His body and blood with all His benefits, to their spiritual nourishment and growth and grace.
(1 Corinthians 10:16; 11:23-26)
Prayer
Prayer is a means of grace. In faith we commune with God. In our hearts and words we adore Him. We confess our sins to Him. We thank Him for His provisions. We come to Him seeking answers. We pray for our members. We pray for the church universal, the body of Christ. We pray for the building of the Kingdom through the Gospel. We pray for other churches in our community. We pray for missions. We pray for our leaders and the governing bodies of this world. We pray according to HIs Word.
(1 Thessalonians 5:17; James 5:16)
Orderly worship
Orderly worship is vital.Scripture alone is the guide and rule of our worship. Our prescribed order of worship is an expression of this reality. Every element of our worship service from the call to gather to the benediction is clearly taught and approved by God’s Word with the goal being the glorifying of God and seeing Christ in all we do.
(Leviticus 10:1-2; 1 Corinthians 14:32-33, 40)
Keep Me Safe O God. For I Take Refuge in You.
Psalm 18:28
